Yandex Direct or VK targeted ads on a single budget — which to choose

A budget of 30,000 roubles a month, two ad channels, and both promise leads. We look not at “which is better in general” but at how to work out which one suits you — based on your type of business, not on what a marketer friend advised.

Yandex Direct is about existing demand

A person typed “order a birthday cake Sochi” themselves — they already want to buy, the only question is from whom. Direct catches that moment. It is the best channel when people actually search for your service: repairs, delivery, parties, home services. If your niche has clear search demand, start here.

VK targeted ads are about building interest

A person wasn't looking for your service, but saw an ad and thought “oh, that's not a bad idea”. Targeted ads work by hitting the audience's pain point or interest, not a direct query. It's a strong channel for things people don't search for every day: gift certificates, original courses, local show programmes, unusual service formats.

Check: does your niche have search demand at all?

Open Yandex Wordstat and type a direct query like “[your service] + [your city]”. If the frequency is more than a couple of hundred impressions a month, there is demand and Direct makes sense. If there are almost no queries, people don't search for it deliberately yet, and Direct will be catching emptiness. Here targeted ads win: you create demand where your audience spends time.

Average order value — and why it matters

With a small budget, the cost of one lead relative to the order value is what matters. If your average order is high (a wedding agency, web development, premium services), you can afford a more expensive lead from Direct, where competition and cost per click are higher. With a lower order value (inexpensive workshops, goods under 2,000 roubles), targeted ads are more profitable — the cost per click is usually lower and volumes are higher.

What's easier to test in a month on a small budget

Direct needs less creative work at the start (the ad structure is clearer) but more attention to keywords and negative keywords, otherwise the budget leaks to irrelevant queries. Targeted ads need several different creatives and texts to test hypotheses — but give fast feedback: within a week you can see which message lands with the audience and which does not.

A combination instead of a choice — but only when the budget allows

The ideal scheme: Direct catches hot demand, targeted ads warm up the audience and build awareness. But with a 30,000-rouble budget, spreading it across two channels is a bad idea: the test sample in each will be too small and you won't understand what really works. First bring one channel to a stable result, then add the second.

There's no universal answer like “Direct is better” or “targeted ads are better” — there's an answer for your specific situation. If in doubt, start with the channel where demand already exists (Direct), and add the second once the first is steadily profitable. Splitting one small budget across two channels at once almost always means both perform just so-so.
